Creating 360-degree immersive films
​for research dissemination

Finding ways to ensure that research makes a difference in society requires innovation and creativity. This page outlines how I have tried to take research 'off the page' and 'immerse learners' in research findings to encourage better social work child protection practices.

Introduction
The following four videos illustrate some of the lessons I have learned from creating immersive 360-degree films to disseminate published research findings.

Video 1
Title: How to share research findings using 360 video

The first video outlines how I used existing research to create a 360-degree video learning experience. This video shows how published research from a study into relationship-based child protection was transferred into an immersive learning platform and design. This video should be of interest to anyone wanting to use any digital media to share research findings.

Video 2
​Title: How to create training designs using 360 video

In this second video, I share some of the lessons I learned developing, deploying and evaluating a training design used to deliver research-based training using 360-degree videos.

Video 3
Title: Can storytelling make research findings more accessible?

In this third video, I outline some of the lessons I learned when using storytelling to create my 360-degree video-based training package. I explore why storytelling is important and how it relates to the original research we undertook. The lessons from this project can be applied to any type of digital projects where you want to deliver authentic research messages using stories.

Video 4
Title: Ethnography, 360 video and research impact

In this fourth video, I share some of the lessons I’ve learned in sharing ethnographic research through 360-degree videos. It outlines the feedback from some of the people who experienced the ethnographic type learning experience and illustrates the impact the experiences have had on changing their social workers practices.

Some of the aims of creating the 360-degree child protection social work films are to:
  • provide the learner with the ‘best seat in the house’ as they accompany a researcher following a social worker's visits to a family.
  • give the learner a sense of a social work visit in real time.
  • allow the learner to experience the emotions, atmospheres, physical spaces that can either create barriers or enable effective relationship-based child protection practices.
  • give learners opportunities to develop their observation skills through planned vicarious learning opportunities.
  • allow learners to access research through a different medium to encourage positive changes in practice.
